In 1867, the first steam roller ever built as such was made by Aveling & Porter Ltd. (now Aveling-Barford Ltd.), and weighed 30 tons.
This model is a compound version of the Aveling & Porter steam roller built between 1920 and 1930, and was maunfactured in weights from 5-20 tons.
It was also available as a single cylinder machine, and the cylinder was of the piston valve type in lieu of the more conventional 'D' type valve.
Many of these machines are still in service at the present time.

This rather attractive model of the (Y11-1) 1920 Aveling and Porter Steam Roller joined the range in 1958.

Variations/Rarities: It was painted a mid green and it had painted dark red rollers, the front being 10 spoke and rear being 14 spoke with the tyre faces being left unpainted.
It had a flywheel which can be painted matt or gloss dark brown or jet black. Neither version is particularly rare.
The roof supporting struts were a mild steel rod which can vary in length somewhat and they can be found painted black on the early issues or green on the later ones. The length of the roof supports affected the height of the roof which means it can be level with or above or below the chimney.
It had gold trim to the top of the chimney and to the steering rack and steering gear but later issues had the trim to the steering gear deleted.
Early issues had axles with crimped ends and the later issues axles had rounded ends.
There were no casting modifications

Just the first version that has a gold trim to makers plate (situated just behind the chimney) is hard to find.
